ABOUT ME

Kasey Whitelaw

Hi, I’m Kasey! I’m an Australian marine biologist, educator and children’s author with a passion for connecting children to science and nature through storytelling and education.

Growing up on the coast of Victoria, I spent my days beachcombing, surfing and exploring the rocky shores. As a child (and still as an adult), I was fascinated by the rock pools teeming with life, eagerly learning the names of the all the creatures I discovered.

My love for the ocean led me to the World Heritage listed Shark Bay Marine Park in Western Australia, where I had the incredible opportunity to work with the famous Monkey Mia dolphins and loggerhead sea turtles.

Inspired by my work and dedicated to nurturing the next generation of ocean warriors, I turned my enthusiasm into pages by diving into the colourful world of picture books. Oh, and I also work in a desert – yes, a marine biologist in a desert!

Field & Research

I earned my degree in marine biology from James Cook University, Qld and graduated with a First Class Honours in Marine Science from the University of Tasmania. During my university years, I was involved in various research projects and had the opportunity to work closely with some incredible wildlife, including echidnas, Tasmanian devils, penguins, seabirds and coral.

Recognising the knowledge gap between research and the public, I made a decision to focus on community engagement to help bridge this divide. This choice took me on an exciting journey, ultimately becoming a ranger and marine biologist in the stunning Shark Bay Marine Park.

In Shark Bay I took on various roles, including dolphin education, research, and conservation, along with marine park research and monitoring. A highlight of my experience was being part of the dugong aerial survey team and leading the loggerhead sea turtle monitoring program.

Sharing the wonders of the ocean with the community was undoubtedly my favorite aspect of the job. I was fortunate to deliver daily dolphin talks, coordinate and deliver many fun-filled school holiday programs and spread ocean magic to community groups and schools.

My Children’s Books – Coming Soon

As a marine biologist, educator and mother, I feel I have unique insight into scientific topics that inspire and connect with children. The ocean is brimming with wonder and excitement, so let’s take our kids on a fascinating journey above and below the sea!

I have two new pictures books set to be released in 2025.

Stay tuned!

Outreach
